Giant Smudge Bowls 2018

This project was inspired by the given task to create an object that is designed to be a Fake, or replica of an other object. The object chosen to replicate was an abalone shell which are commonly used in ceremony by many First Nations People as a conductor for prayers and burning traditional medicines. The 4 main medicines used within these prayers for burning are Sage, Sweet grass, Tobacco and Cedar. With the four directions each medicine sat in the bowls for ceremony. The size of the smudge bowls was created not only for amplifying prayers but to amplify the message of many issues that indigenous people struggle with from identity, addictions, trauma and displacement. It was my goal to create an object that could also be used in ceremony in large gatherings. These bowls can be now found at Unistot’en Healing lodge near Houston B.C and Spirit of the Children in New West Minister B.C
