Nisga'a translation for "Doorway"

Cedar is known to the northwest coast peoples as the “Tree of life”. From the smell of fresh cut cedar bows for ceremony to the wood shavings from a newly carved mask , Cedar is also a powerful medicine.

A house front is a design painted on cedar planks that are created in the shape of a house. This house is a place used for gatherings, housing, and ceremony. Within the design, a doorway is created, which can also be known as a “portal”. Essentially, this is a way to be connected to our ancestors in a space that is sacred.

Within this house front, a supernatural being exists to welcome those who are entering a sacred space to reconnect and receive healing.
